The Department of Military Science at Arizona State University was founded in 1935.  The Sun Devil Battalion is one of the oldest and more successful ROTC programs in the country. Established as the Department of Military Science in the College of Liberal Arts, the Battalion ranks in the top 10 institutions across the U.S. and commissions on average 50 second Lieutenants for the Army service in Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard components each year.  

Since 1989 ASU Army ROTC has been awarded five times with the prestigious General Douglas MacArthur Award for Best Large School Program in the Western region, the latest in 2021. Recently the Sun Devil Battalion was also recognized with the esteemed 5th Brigade Geronimo Award for best largest Battalion in the West region in 2023.

In addition, the Amy ROTC Ranger Challenge Team has placed in the top 10 percent of large schools in California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, and most recently was awarded Regional Champions and 5th Overall in 2021.The Sun Devil Team took home the ROTC team trophy at the 12th Annual Bataan Death March Commemoration at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
